Delhi Rises to Toxic Haze After Celebrations

Tuesday brought residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves inhaling extremely polluted air that fell into the "alarming" range.

Extremely High Air Quality Levels

Several parts of the capital showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents 10x the safe limit established by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x exceeding acceptable standards.

Firecracker Prohibition and Recent Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, officials had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly pollution that engulfs the metropolis as the cold season sets in.

However in recent months, the recently formed regional administration approached the judicial authority to request a relaxation of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been criticized by conservation groups as being only about 30% lower impact – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and public health".

Judicial Ruling and Reality

To the disappointment of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities complied with the proposal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during limited hours throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was extensive flouting of the regulated periods across the city, with little monitoring regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Many air quality sensors throughout Delhi registered air quality spiking around the night hours to some of the worst levels recorded during celebrations in at least three years.

International Consequences

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a dispute with bordering the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to declining pollution levels in their urban centers on pollutants originating in India following the events.

Long-Standing Pollution Problem

Alarmingly severe concentrations of pollution in Delhi have persisted as a significant issue for fifteen-plus years, with the problem gradually deteriorating.

Around Diwali, the amount of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the most severe readings ever documented in the Chinese city, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Various Pollution Sources

The problem in the city is caused by a combination of multiple factors including transportation pollution, construction debris, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to prepare for next season, generating toxic smog that remains stagnant over the city as winter air descends.

Health and Economic Toll

Public health and economic toll on the approximately 33 million inhabitants living in the capital region is enormous, according to numerous investigations.

The contaminated air results in elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can result in malignancies.

Environmental contamination is projected to be causing 10,000 early deaths annually in Delhi.
