Per data released by Israel, a minimum of 98 Palestinian individuals have died while detained starting from October 2023. An advocacy organization located in Israel has indicated that the actual number is probably substantially higher, as a result of many of unaccounted for people in Gaza.

Non-Combatant Fatalities

Classified Israeli data suggests that the vast majority of Palestinian detainees from Gaza who lost their lives in prison were ordinary citizens, per a related investigation.

In May of 2024, a defense forces registry tracking all combatants in Gaza, a roster of over 47,000 identified persons, documented only 21 fatalities in custody. By that point, 65 individuals from Palestine from Gaza had perished in jail.

Prison Situation

Physical violence, torture, and additional maltreatment of Palestinian individuals has been normalised across Israel’s jail system during two years of conflict. High-ranking authorities have openly admitted inadequate food and an subterranean prison detaining Palestinians who never see daylight.

High-Profile Cases

Certain fatalities in confinement have been high profile, including a middle-aged healthcare leader who died in confinement after a third of a year in confinement.

Documentation Problems

For 21 instances, primarily individuals from Gaza, analysts could not to connect the minimal data provided by authorities to a death documented by advocacy bodies, by means of testimony from released detainees or reporting in the press.

The prisoners’ relatives could be unaware about their relatives’ casualties as well, as Israel has impeded efforts to monitor Palestinians it is holding. Over half a year at the start of the war, the armed services would not provide to supply essential data about the condition of thousands of people detained in Gaza, effectively carrying out a practice of unacknowledged detention, according to the advocacy organization.
